We have a very special event coming up, 18 September to 24 September. I'm hosting Murat & Michelle here in Auckland as part of their Europe and Austro-Asia tour. They are amazing teachers and performers. This will not be your typical festival type workshops. Also there won't be any open level workshops. Beginners and pre- intermediate will have their own special classes. The balance of workshops will be geared for intermediate, advanced and teachers, Which will definitely be inspiring and but not typical.
They say that a picture is worth a thousand words so here is a link to one of their youtube videos, which is my favorite because for me it relates to what I and what I think our community aspires to. As you'll see it's not flashy stage but there are some very interesting moves and I love the progression from start to end. It's not all in your face in the beginning. It's not the best quality and they look a bit distorted, but the dancing isn't.
For additional information, go to www.muraterdemsel.com to learn more about Murat and his art.
Also their joint website is www.muratandmichelle.com.
Murat has taught and performed extensively in North America. His background as an artist and musician has influenced his teaching style which has been decribed as a combination of the technical analysis of movement together with a sensory interpretation of music.
Michelle Erdemsel took her first steps in dance at the age of 6. She has an extensive background in dance, including Argentine Tango, and is also recognized for choreography of theatre and television. Michelle has dedicated her life to teaching and dancing tango with her husband and partner Murat. Together they travel to teach and perform at major festivals.
Stay tuned for follow up details in upcoming emails. I look forward to seeing you all again when I return at our Friday 29 milonga.
Cheers, Maida & David

After Ney's teaching visit to Sydney 2005, he has been invited to return by popular demand. This year he'll be accompanied by Jennifer Bratt. They have been traveling throughout the US and Buenos Aires, teaching and performing. They also have regular classes and a practica in New York City.
I know them personally and I am very excited about hosting them here in New Zealand. They will be teaching and performing in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth, before arriving here on Friday 23, February.
They will be performing that Friday evening at our milonga. Their milonguero close embrace style of tango is innovative, and dynamic. Jennifer's embellishments and style are impressive and inspiring. I couldn't take my eyes off her footwork. Those of you who feel that the dance floors are not big enough, I suggest you watch their video, title: Ney Melo & Jennifer Bratt,"La Bruja" on www.youtube.com/tangotelevision . They show how one can dance on a small crowded floor and do it beautifully. Also Jennifer has a sequence of embellishment videos on YouTube, which demonstrate the beauty of her footwork. Go to youtube.com to see her videos brought to you by Bewitching Black Lotus.
Ladies get ready, she will also bring COMME IL FAUT shoes for you, direct from Buenos Aires. We will set aside a time just for shoe shopping.
TESTIMONIAL FROM SYDNEY
“I only got to the last workshop by Ney Melo due to illness however I am SO GLAD I got to have the experience of learning from him. Ney gave me new insights into basic principles of Tango dancing using visual descriptions that made so much sense it was SO EASY to grasp what he was teaching me. The highlights from this experience were however way surpassed by the experience of dancing with him. He insisted I attend the milonga following the lesson so he could give me an experience of tango that would ensure I would fall in love with Tango dancing. I replied I’d already fallen in love with Tango dancing. We danced a waltz tango. He shifted my arm (as he’d done in the class) to make the connection and then we just stepped . . . . randomly, musically but ever so lightly - it was as if are feet were not touching the floor. The only way I can describe the experience was to use an analogy with the most luxury car available on the market. If that is a Rolls Royce then that was what it was like.”
Cecily Michaels.
NEY MELO & JENNIFER BRATT
Ney Melo and Jennifer Bratt dance an elegant style of social tango which is rooted in the traditions of the neighborhood of Villa Urquiza in Buenos Aires. Their dance is defined by a smooth and graceful walk, a powerful sense of musicality, subtle steps entwined with intricate embellishments, and an intimate embrace. Their passion and respect for tango, its culture, and its music is clearly evidenced in their emotional dancing, as well as in their teaching.
Jennifer Bratt is regarded by many as the best female tango dancer in the US. Her sharp embellishments and articulate feet are often compared to those of the renowned Geraldine Rojas. Jennifer is the author of the popular, "ASK MALEVA", Tango Advice Column, the photographer of Close-Embrace.com, and the owner of Maleva Shoes which has been bringing the best hard-to-get Argentine tango shoes to ladies around the world for over 3 years. Click here for Jennifer's website: www.close-embrace.com
Ney Melo has studied tango with masters of the Villa Urquiza and nuevo styles of tango; Jorge Dispari y La Turca, Chicho Frumboli and Julio Balmaceda & Corina de La Rosa and Javier Rodriguez. He teaches a very popular Argentine tango course at New York University, has performed tango on Broadway's Town Hall Theatre stage, and alongside the "Color Tango" Orchestra from Buenos Aires.
Ney and Jennifer have recently taught and performed in Romania, Singapore, Malaysia and Australia as well as extensively all over North America. Together they organize 2 annual tours to Buenos Aires for dancers (where they live for 4 months of the year).
They will be here for 6 days from 23 Feb to 28 Feb. Workshops and private tuition details will be announced later.
